Ogi OvermanOgi Overman

Ogi is considered one of the pioneers of alternative, community journalism in the Triad.

He began his writing career at The Sports Page, a free weekly based in Winston-Salem, in 1984. By early 1985 he was named editor, a position he held until the paper’s demise in 1988. He then co-founded ESP Magazine, a free weekly based in Greensboro, where he remained as managing editor until taking a position as sports editor at The Chatham News in Siler City. During his five-year tenure there, he won five N.C. Press Association awards for sports columns and sports coverage. He then returned to ESP Magazine, serving as executive editor for the next five years.

Next he took the plunge into radio, hosting a two-hour daily talk/music show called “Our Town” on WGOS 1070 AM. He wound up back in print journalism, however, co-founding the Greater Greensboro Observer in 2004. That enterprise was short-lived, however, and he took his current position as columnist and feature writer at YES! Weekly, another alternative paper based in Greensboro. He also freelances for several other publications and is writing a non-fiction book as well as a screenplay.

Ogi is a native of Burlington, N.C. and a 1969 graduate of East Carolina University with a degree in philosophy. He and his wife Janet reside in Greensboro.
