Dr. Don Martin
Don Martin grew up in Athens, Georgia and moved to North Carolina to attend Duke University. He received his bachelor’s degree in Physics and a master’s of arts in teaching degree in math while at Duke. After teaching four years at Wilkes Central High School, he attended the University of Kentucky and received his Ed.D in Educational Administration. He served 9 years as a superintendent in Kentucky (in two districts), before becoming superintendent of the newly merged Rowan-Salisbury school system in North Carolina. He was appointed superintendent of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools in 1994.

After 19 years, he retired in June 2013 and is now serving as a professor of educational leadership at High Point University. In November of 2014 he was elected to the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners.

During his long career as a superintendent he won many awards, including North Carolina Superintendent of the Year in 2011. He wife Rita recently retired from North Forsyth High School where she served as director of guidance for many years. He has three married children, John, Tom and Ashley, and three grandchildren, Delanie, Sidda, and Brooks.
