"M.A.D.D. Idea to Save Lives"
Mothers Against Drunk Driving want Congress to mandate that anyone with a
DUI conviction have a breathalyzer device installed in their car which
would prevent them from driving drunk again. But people drive drunk everyday
who have never been arrested. That’s why I think a federal law should
mandate interlock devices on all cars.
This may seem an inconvenience to those of us who don’t drink, but so are
metal detectors in airports, and we all acknowledge their necessity.
If the auto breathalyzer can be made foolproof, with no false positive
readings, and if they can save even one life, then Congress should get on
board.
In the meantime, we’ll have to make do with a more primitive device. If
your friend is drunk, take his car keys away from him. He may hate you that
night, but he’ll thank you in the morning.
