"My Encounter with Brad Miller"
October 6th / 8th, 2006
After last week's commentary, I tried to make peace with Brad Miller by calling him on his private cell phone. The call didn't go so well.
I said, "Congressman, I want you to know that I have nothing against you personally, and there's no sense in this feud escalating."
But for most of our brief conversation, Miller angrily quoted from my column and repeatedly defended the actions of his staff, who had reneged on a promise for Brad to face Vernon Robinson on Triad Today. The longer we stayed on the phone, the more defensive he became.
Miller said, "I take the word of my staff over yours."
I said, "Congressman, I take offense to that."
Miller replied angrily, "Well I don't care what you take offense to!"
I asked, "Brad, what are you so scared of?"
Miller then raised his voice and said loudly, "I'm not scared of a damn thing! And I gotta go vote." Then he hung up.
I was shocked by Miller's contentious nature, and offended by his attack on my integrity.
Triad Today's reputation is well established, including a citation by Congress, and the prestigious Spectrum of Democracy Award. Moreover, scores of incumbents have appeared on Triad Today who weren't afraid to answer my questions.
Brad Miller, on the other hand, is afraid of just about everything and everybody.
He is scared of Vernon Robinson. He is scared to be interviewed on Triad Today.
He is scared to appear on FM101. In fact, Brad is scared to participate in any forum which he can't control. And now, on top of being scared, Brad Miller is angry with the media for reporting that he is scared.
The 13th District is mainly White and Democrat. But, ironically, Brad's angry rant ("I'm not scared of a damn thing, and I gotta go vote") might just be the rally cry of citizens on November 7, when they show they're not afraid to vote for an outspoken Black Republican over a frightened White Democrat. |
